Conventional or Organic

This article is suggesting there is no real difference in nutrient content between conventional foods and organic. I don’t have proof to dispute that but it suggests there are findings that there MAY be a benefit to not consuming foods that are treated with pesticides…..I guess that’s a nice bonus worth considering, right? Unbelievable!

  1. Another piece of flawed research and then spun in the wrong direction by the media. As someone who has been involved with the organic food movement since the late 1960s, these attacks are nothing new and they come from all sources. In this case, the research is done by medical doctors combing existing research. Western medical doctors as we know have minimal (and that is being generous) knowledge of nutrition and so their ability to discern one piece of food science research from another is questionable. To make matters worth, despite that they did find one very strong piece of evidence that alone should direct people to organics. The new release states the following about their research:

(“Her team did find a notable difference with antibiotic-resistant germs, a public health concern because they are harder to treat if they cause food poisoning.

Specialists long have said that organic or not, the chances of bacterial contamination of food are the same, and Monday’s analysis agreed. But when bacteria did lurk in chicken or pork, germs in the non-organic meats had a 33 percent higher risk of being resistant to multiple antibiotics, the researchers reported Monday in the journal Annals of Internal Medicine.”)

What does the headline say: “Study Questions Benefits of Organic Food”. It should have read, “Doctors Find a Higher Risk of Being Resistant to Antibiotics from Bacteria on Non-Organic Foods”.

Check out this article about the benefits of organics. Contained within it are links to research done by food scientists and nutritionists to substantiate each claim.

And even if one does not believe that organic food makes a difference in terms of improved health and fitness, no one including this group is disputing the evidence of the value that supporting organics has for the environment. We cannot sustain our planet on the current methods of growing food and that alone should have everyone supporting organic farmers as much as possible.

Ok, Fred, you did get me going today. :-)
