What The Hell Is Sarcopenia?

There’s been a lot of talk lately about sarcopenia, so I figured I’d discuss what exactly it is and how to go about trying to slow it down.

Sarcopenia is the loss of muscle mass and coordination that results from the process of aging.  After the age of 25, people who do not strength train can lose between 5 pounds of muscle and gain 15 pounds of fat per decade. Over time, those figures can become significant and can lead to many health problems.

So how does one go about slowing down sarcopenia? Well, there’s nothing too fancy here, it’s pretty straight forward as it’s no great secret, it’s an implementation of a safe, efficient and effective strength program 2-3 times per week eating right and getting some cardiovascular exercise in.

  1. Sarcopenia – love it. Sorry – I’m from across the Pond – here, we call it ‘becoming a pensioner’. I’m 57 and a recent convert to high-weight and full-body workouts. Used to be a martial artist and have trained with free weights quite a lot.

I think that nowhere near enough is done to promote correct and effective strength and fitness training amongst the older sectors of our population.

Please keep it up. Us ‘old guys’ need to keep up with the kids.

My grandson was amazed to discover the other day that I can still run up a staircase. He is 19, well over six feet tall and quite powerfully-built and he couldn’t keep up with me.

I was quite embarrassed. He should have walked it.

    What is going on ?

    Does anyone out there know?

Let me know if you do. ………..
