A.O.B.S.
This post is much different from my normal postings as what I attended Saturday is well worth mentioning.
On Saturday, October 13th, I attended the 29th AOBS dinner. The Association of Oldetime Barbell and Strongmen (AOBS), which was founded by Vic Boff, focuses on education regarding Iron Game history and drug free sport and each year, individuals through the iron game history are recognized and awarded. Generally, I’m not much of a historian, but this year I was asked to be a guest and so I went with my buddy, Doug Scott. Doug and I sat with legendary NFL strength coach, Kim Wood and discussed the future of the sport. We also had the pleasure of sitting with Kim’s son, John as well as was Bill Hinbern (who has the largest collection of old-time training books) and programs discussed some of the old courses of the legends and York historian, Jan Dellinger spoke of great stories from years past…..things that are long gone and will not soon be replaced. I spent a particular amount of time speaking with Jan – a super nice guy – and then got to watch some great feats of strength by The Human Vise, Pat Povilaitis and others.
If you are a bit of a historian or respect the physical culture as it once was, you may want to invest in the organization and receive their newsletter. You may even want to consider going to next years event and see some of the greats in the sport.
